Jun Ishikawa
Componist
Composer Jun Ishikawa has written a collection of piano pieces especially for this concert. It is a collection of small dreams, like a bite of a cookie.
Five primitive pieces: "The Grate Gate of The Dream", "Aphorisms", "Song of Light", "The Golden Wheel" and "Hymn".
We hope you enjoy these five primitive pieces.
Multi-movement, it's cookie music".
There is an episode that Stockhausen is said to have made such a sarcastic remark about multi-movement composition, though it is not true. In the early-mid period he tended to give one title to a long piece of music, and he thought that the method of dividing one concept into many movements was not thoughtful.
The composer focused on this nuance of cookie-cutter music to create his work. In this age of subscriptions, it is said that music is becoming shorter and shorter. I chose this title because of the cuteness of the word "cookie", although I think it is a bit ironic.
The song is, however, in some theoretical terms, 'tonal'. In writing this song, the composer was thinking about what is the most primitive thing for him. The first piece is based on a piece of music he composed when he was in secondary school.
I composed five different pieces of music on the theme of "simple songs for me".
1. The Grate Gate of The Dream
I composed this music when I was a junior high school student. I composed it with the image of the introduction of a dream. The reverberating bass bounces across a wide range of notes, reflecting a dark and wide space.
2. Aphorisms
The music has a classical appearance, but each piece is filled with variety and change. What does the wise man, the world's living guide, have to teach us?
3. Song of Light
Composed a few years ago. The use of sound is reminiscent of the gentle light filtering through the trees, but with a hint of the Gregorian chant Dies irae in the background. The composer once saw in a dream a garden leading to heaven. Will death and destruction be peaceful and filled with light?
4. The Golden Wheel
A mechanical scherzo with a soundtrack reminiscent of a harpsichord piece. The music has both a disciplined diligence and a sombre expression.
5. Hymn
A very frank anthem. All praise is sung with a gentle light.
